Public Sector

Public Sector operations include lot of processes and activities encompassing all areas like security, public health and economics. Each of these occurs on a massive scale and are characterised by a very complex supply chain. Also, Governments need to make the best out of the limited budget available to them. This makes it imperative to increase the operational efficiency of these processes. Resources and capital need to be optimally utilized to achieve all these ends. Private sector best practices can be used to increase operational efficiency of public sector organizations and processes. Furthermore, with a more demanding and aware electorate (as these activities have a direct impact on their lives), all public sector activities need to provide an increased level of transparency than prevailing earlier.
Sourcing and procurement is one of the areas where there is significant room for improvement. Huge quantities of food, warfare, equipments and services are sourced by the public sector. Quality of goods and services delivered becomes a huge issue due to the lack of a proper supplier selection process. Proper evaluation needs to be done based on the suppliers’ capacity, track record, correct technical and functional specifications of the sourced products. Furthermore, the supplier selection and evaluation process needs to be streamlined. Governments can increase the visibility of the whole process by the use of “e-Procurement”. Once the supplier is selected, proper contract management with the supplier becomes vital. Aggregation of public sector demand is another area which will help source products at a lesser price. Presently this is not happening due lack of co-ordination between the various departments.
Logistics and distribution is another important area in the public sector related to mobilization of resources and manpower in a large scale both for the normal functioning of processes and during wars & emergency situations.
Information Technology: Governments need to derive the maximum value out of their IT investments. This includes selecting the right kind of technology for their needs, decreasing the complexity, integrating the IT platforms to increase visibility and decreasing the redundancy of same operations provided by different isolated IT systems.
Public transportation: With increasing congestion on roads, governments need to properly plan the infrastructure options to tackle this. Average speeds in metros are as low as 10-12 km/hr in some cases. This calls for a proper planning of the future investments in public transport in the form of new vehicles, parking spaces etc. Modern cities have tackled these congestion problems by encouraging public transport through the help of the hub and spoke model, park and drive model, multi-tier parking, automated parking and many more innovative ways. Aqua MCG helps governments design their transportation network keeping in mind the long term goals of the government and future projections of public transportation needs.
